2-Factor authentication (2FA): setup, removal, and account recovery

Adding 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) provides an essential extra layer of security to your Prey account.

Prerequisites

Before activating 2FA, you need a time-based one-time password (TOTP) authentication app. We recommend Google Authenticator (available for iOS and Android), though other apps are also supported.

How to enable 2FA

  1. Log in to your Prey panel and navigate to Settings > Security > 2-Factor verification.
  2. Open your authenticator app and scan the provided QR code to link your device.
  3. Copy/Print and safely store your recovery code.

Save your recovery code
Please make sure to save the recovery codes generated by your panel during setup. If you lose access to your authenticator app and do not have your recovery codes, you risk permanent lockout.

How to disable 2FA

If you still have access to your account and want to disable two-factor authentication, you can do so directly from the Control Panel.

  1. Navigate to 2FA settings: Log in to your Prey Control Panel, go to Settings in the main menu, and select 2-Factor Verification.
  2. Authenticate the request: Open your authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator, Authy), locate your Prey entry, and copy the current 6-digit TOTP code.
  3. Disable 2FA: Paste the code into the verification field on the Prey Panel and click Disable to confirm the change. Once submitted, the status under 2-Factor Verification will update to Disabled, and subsequent logins will only require your primary credentials.

Disabling 2FA reduces your account security. We strongly recommend keeping 2FA enabled, especially when managing enterprise or fleet-wide device security.

Lost access or missing recovery code?

If you have lost access to your authenticator app and cannot locate your recovery code, account recovery options depend on your subscription tier:

  • Free accounts: Due to strict security policies and automated account management, our support team cannot manually disable 2FA or restore access to Free accounts.
  • Paid accounts: Account owners can request a manual 2FA reset by contacting Support directly from their Prey panel by clicking on the Help widget. For security compliance, additional identity verification may be required on a case-by-case basis.
